Since its debut in 2020, Expedition X has taken viewers from haunted buildings and mysterious creatures to UFO reports, cryptids and some of the strangest paranormal stories on television.
But not every season has been equally memorable.
With eleven completed seasons and Season 12 now underway, there is plenty of material to compare. Discovery describes the series as an investigation into the stranger side of the unknown, combining Josh Gates with scientist Phil Torres and paranormal investigators.
So which seasons are actually worth watching?
Here is our ranking from worst to best.
11. Season 11
Season 11 had some fascinating locations, including Vulture City, the USS Hornet and Predjama Castle.
However, the season sometimes felt less consistent than the strongest years of the show.
The investigations were entertaining, but some cases did not create the same level of excitement as the show's biggest cryptid and paranormal investigations.
10. Season 8
Season 8 introduced Heather Amaro to the core team and immediately gave viewers some major locations.
The two part investigation at Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was a strong introduction, followed by investigations involving Loch Ness and haunted Savannah.
The season was important because it established a new era for the show, but the transition also meant that some longtime viewers needed time to adjust to the new team. Discovery officially introduced Amaro as a third generation paranormal researcher when the season launched.
9. Season 1
The first season deserves credit for establishing the entire concept.
Mothman.
Cambodia's jungle monster.
The Island of the Dolls.
Mammoth Cave.
These investigations gave viewers an early look at what Expedition X wanted to become.
But compared with later seasons, the production and investigation style still felt like the show was finding its identity.
8. Season 7
Season 7 brought some genuinely memorable cases.
The team traveled to Transylvania to investigate a haunted forest and later investigated reports of a dangerous Sasquatch in Alaska.
There was also a major investigation on Mackinac Island.
The season successfully mixed paranormal investigations with cryptid stories, although it did not quite reach the level of the show's strongest seasons.
7. Season 6
Season 6 returned to a formula that Expedition X does particularly well.
Haunted locations.
Dark history.
Unexplained encounters.
The season began with an investigation into Detroit's abandoned Eloise Asylum, giving Josh Gates, Phil Torres and Jessica Chobot another classic haunted location to investigate.
It was a solid season for viewers who prefer paranormal cases over UFO investigations.
6. Season 3
Season 3 was one of the show's most ambitious seasons.
The team investigated the American Werewolf, Beast of Bray Road and the famous Socorro UFO incident.
Then the series moved underwater.
The final episodes investigated unidentified submerged objects near Catalina Island.
That combination of cryptids, UFOs and underwater mysteries made Season 3 particularly unusual.
5. Season 9
By Season 9, Heather Amaro and Phil Torres had become a much more established field team.
The season included a haunted French chateau, the Beast of Boggy Creek and a controversial investigation involving Nazi occult claims.
The cases had a darker atmosphere, and the chemistry between the investigators was becoming increasingly recognizable.
4. Season 5
Season 5 delivered some of the most varied investigations of the early Expedition X era.
The team investigated strange objects around Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano, the Ozark Howler, haunted cenotes in Mexico, an Alaskan lake monster and the legendary Lusca.
It was a season that consistently understood what viewers wanted from the series.
Strange locations.
Strange creatures.
And mysteries that could not easily be explained.
3. Season 10
Season 10 is one of the strongest examples of the show's modern format.
Josh Gates and Heather Amaro investigated Ireland's notorious Spike Island prison, while later episodes explored the Conjuring House, the Bridgewater Triangle and other supernatural cases.
Discovery promoted the season as a mixture of haunted prisons, supernatural hotspots and mysterious creatures.
It also showed that the newer team could carry the series into its next era.
2. Season 2
Season 2 remains one of the most entertaining seasons for fans of classic Expedition X.
The team investigated a haunted ghost town, mysterious cattle deaths, the Bell Witch, ghost lights in Texas and the Jersey Devil.
Then came Lake Champlain and the search for a reported giant creature.
The season had an excellent mixture of paranormal stories and cryptid investigations, which helped establish the show's early identity.
1. Season 4
Season 4 takes the top spot for one simple reason.
It represents Expedition X at a point where the show had already learned what worked.
The investigations felt bigger, the cases became more varied and the chemistry between Josh Gates, Phil Torres and Jessica Chobot was well established.
For fans who prefer the original team, Season 4 is arguably the best place to experience the classic version of the show.
What About Season 12?
Season 12 is not ranked yet.
It premiered in August 2026 and is still ongoing.
The season began with investigations surrounding Robin Hood's ghosts and Sherwood Forest before moving into Skinwalker reports, Guam hauntings and Revolutionary War ghost stories.
It could eventually move high on this list.
But judging an unfinished season would be premature.
Final Ranking
Here is the complete ranking of the completed seasons:
11. Season 11

The ranking is subjective, of course.
Some fans will prefer the original Jessica Chobot era, while others may think Heather Amaro has taken the show to a stronger place.
And that is what makes Expedition X interesting.
The cast has changed.
The locations have changed.
The mysteries have changed.
But the central question has remained the same.
What is really out there?
