Is Expedition Unknown Officially Ending? What We Know So Far

For fans of Josh Gates, the idea of Expedition Unknown ending is hard to imagine.

For more than a decade, the series has taken viewers around the world in search of lost treasures, forgotten civilizations, shipwrecks, ancient mysteries and historical secrets.

But now a question is spreading among fans:

Is Expedition Unknown finally coming to an end?

The short answer is no official cancellation has been announced.

In fact, the latest information points in the opposite direction.

Expedition Unknown Is Still Active in 2026

The strongest evidence comes from the show's continuing 2026 episodes.

The latest listings show Josh Gates investigating new mysteries throughout 2026, including the search for World War II hellships, the lost prisoners of the Pacific, the mysterious death jars of Laos, a sunken pirate site in Jamaica, Mexico's underground world and Inca treasure tunnels in Peru.

One of the most recent episodes, "Inca Treasure Tunnels," was listed for August 4, 2026, with Gates exploring a network of tunnels beneath Cusco, Peru.

That alone makes the idea that the show has already ended difficult to support.

The series is still producing and airing new material.

So Why Are Fans Asking About Cancellation?

Part of the confusion comes from the way streaming services and television databases organize seasons.

Different platforms can display different season numbers, episode counts and release dates.

For example, Prime Video currently lists a 2026 version of Expedition Unknown with 17 seasons, while other databases use different numbering systems.

That can make it appear as though one platform has finished the show while another is showing something completely different.

But season numbering is not the same thing as cancellation.

Josh Gates Has Not Disappeared

Another reason there is little reason to believe Expedition Unknown has simply vanished is Josh Gates himself.

Gates remains heavily involved with Discovery's expedition programming.

In addition to Expedition Unknown, he has continued with other projects, including Expedition Files, which Discovery launched as another mystery focused series featuring Gates.

That means Discovery continues to see Gates as an important part of its adventure and exploration programming.

The existence of another Josh Gates series does not mean Expedition Unknown is being replaced.

It does, however, explain why some viewers may see Gates appearing in several different programs and wonder whether the original series is being phased out.

The Show Is Still Listed by Discovery

Discovery's official website continues to list Expedition Unknown among its shows.

The network's description still identifies the program as Josh Gates' global investigation into legendary mysteries, lost cities, buried treasures and other unexplained historical stories.

That is important because there has been no official Discovery announcement saying the series is ending permanently.

Until Discovery makes such an announcement, claims that the show has been canceled should be treated carefully.

There Is Also Evidence Pointing Toward a Return

Current television tracking information is even more encouraging.

One current tracking service lists Expedition Unknown as Returning, with another season indicated but without a publicly announced premiere date. It records the most recent episode as airing in August 2026.

Another current tracker goes further and lists the series as renewed, while noting that a premiere date has not yet been announced.

These are not substitutes for an official Discovery renewal announcement, so they should not be presented as if Discovery itself has formally announced a new season.

But they certainly do not support the idea that the show has been officially canceled.

What About Josh Gates' New Projects?

This is probably one of the biggest reasons behind the speculation.

Josh Gates has become more than just the host of one television show.

His Discovery projects now include different formats and different types of mysteries.

Expedition Unknown focuses heavily on historical mysteries, archaeology, lost treasures and exploration.

Expedition Files takes a somewhat different approach, concentrating on compelling true stories and mysteries that can involve unexplained events and controversial cases.

Having multiple shows does not necessarily mean one of them has to disappear.

For Discovery, it can actually make sense to have several programs built around the same recognizable personality.

The 2026 Season Has Already Given Fans Big Stories

If the show were quietly winding down, the scale of some of the 2026 investigations would be surprising.

The 2026 episodes have included access to a U.S. Department of Defense recovery mission connected to lost World War II prisoners, underwater investigations and archaeological expeditions.

The Jamaica investigation was particularly ambitious.

Gates joined a sonar survey that located a submerged site described as a possible pirate lair, followed by underwater investigation using photogrammetry.

These are not simply recycled episodes from the past.

They represent new expeditions and new investigations.

Could the Format Change?

That is certainly possible.

Television shows evolve.

A future season could have fewer episodes.

It could focus more heavily on major historical discoveries.

It could feature more one off investigations.

Or Discovery could continue using Gates across several different expedition programs.

But there is currently no reliable evidence that Discovery is preparing to permanently end Expedition Unknown.

What We Can Actually Confirm

As of August 25, 2026, the most defensible picture is:

The show is not officially canceled.

New 2026 episodes have aired.

Josh Gates remains active with Discovery.

Discovery continues to list Expedition Unknown.

Current television tracking information indicates the series is returning, although a new premiere date has not been publicly established in the sources reviewed.

What we cannot responsibly claim is that a specific future season has an official premiere date unless Discovery announces one.

Why Fans Shouldn't Believe Every "Canceled" Headline

Whenever a long running television series goes quiet between batches of episodes, cancellation rumors usually appear.

That is especially common with streaming and cable shows because networks don't always announce their future schedules months in advance.

A missing trailer does not mean cancellation.

A missing premiere date does not mean cancellation.

And a show appearing on a different platform under a different season number certainly does not mean cancellation.

The evidence currently available simply doesn't support that conclusion.

The Real Mystery Is When Josh Gates Will Be Back

So, is Expedition Unknown officially ending?

No.

At least based on the latest information available as of August 25, 2026, there is no official cancellation announcement from Discovery.

More importantly, the series has continued with new 2026 investigations, including episodes released as recently as August.

That makes the current situation much more accurately described as the show continuing while its next phase remains uncertain, rather than the end of the series.

For fans, that is good news.

Josh Gates is still exploring.

The mysteries are still out there.

And Expedition Unknown still has plenty of places left to go.

The show may be between chapters, but there is no verified evidence that the book is closing.
